What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a Japanese physical therapy designed to promote the body’s own healing abilities. Literally means “finger pressure”, the technique primarily involves the application of deep, flowing thumb and palm pressure to acupuncture points on the back, legs, arms, neck and head.
Energy known as Ki travels in twelve pathways through the body known as meridians. Although related to and named after the vital organs of the body such as kidneys, liver heart, stomach lungs and so on, the meridians also have a wider meaning encompassing the physical and emotional functioning of the whole person. Connecting the points or tsubos with the Ki or energy, movement is created and the stagnate energy between these tsubo points is encouraged by stretching and opening the meridian lines to deepen the movement towards balance.
This Ki that travels along the meridians rebalance the body and gives an accompanying feeling of relaxation and wellbeing. Energy can be tonified where deficient and sedated if is excess and promoting an opportunity for a proper flow between each tsubos point.
To ensure maximum comfort and benefit, the amount of pressure given is always determined by the client’s condition and preference.
Shiatsu can also be considered a traditional healing therapy, rejuvenating the mind and body by stimulating the points along the meridians, similar to acupuncture but without the needles.
Shiatsu affects the muscles, joints and body fluids increasing circulation, flexibility and vitality and as a result relaxation.
